Debunking the cliché advice of finding your passion and doing somehting you love to do. Here's the raw, unfiltered truth of the matter.

The other day someone asked me an interesting question:

“Maikel, how do I force myself to love the journey, not the destination?”

Because, that’s what you’re supposed to do, right?

Every guru, influencer, well-meaning grandma and their dogs will tell you that you need to follow your passion. That you’ll “Never work a day in your life” when you do something that you love doing.

But… that’s terrible advice!
(for multiple reasons actually)

And so, my answer came as a shock to him:

“Don’t even THINK about forcing yourself to love something you dislike!”

Me

Here’s the truth:

You are the director of your life. And while it’s the most cliché thing since sliced bread, it’s also a powerful concept to apply!

There are MILLIONS of goals you could aim for (billions even). Each goal has its own requirements, the work you’ll have to do. And even then, each goal has a TON of different ways to reach the end destination.

For example:

Maybe you hate running with a passion.
The gym is your personal kryptonite.
The only cycling you’ve ever done is a vicious cycle…
BUT… you LOVE swimming.

Pick the last option!

Don’t force yourself to love your runs or the gym. Don’t pick the options that give you existential dread. Find the things you naturally like already. Make sure it also fits your goal and you’ve found your path in life!

But…

There’s a caveat to this!

Think about it like this:

If I force you to play a video game that is WAY too difficult, will you enjoy doing it? Probably not. After all, you’ll get your ass handed to you, without a snowball’s chance to win at the game.

Sucking at something never feels good…

But here’s the thing:

Unless you push through the period where you suck, you will never find out if you actually like something. In our video game example, you might actually LOVE the game, but only after you have gotten the hang of it and got some wins on the board.

TL;DR:

That’s my boring-ass way to say that this shit takes time!

Give it a few weeks or months, depending on the thing.

Decide if the chosen path is YOUR path, and if not, adjust!

That’s how to actually love the journey!

Cheers!
Maikel
